>Is There A 60-Year Pacific Decadal Oscillation Cycle?


Climate bloggers often refer to a 60-year cycle in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). I assume they derive the 60-year period from the graph of the PDO, Figure 1, from the JISAO “Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO)” web page. As illustrated the PDO data changes from positive to negative about 1945, reaches into positive values again about 1975, then appears to “switch” back to negative in the 2000s. Remarkably, this 60-year period is referred to even though the data before 1945 does not support a continuation before then. And referring to Paleoclimatological studies of the PDO, there is also no evidence of a persistent 60-year PDO cycle.

The NOAA Paleoclimatology Climate Reconstructions webpage includes 5 PDO reconstructions under the heading of Atmospheric Circulation Patterns. Figure 2 is a comparison graph of the data available from those studies. Note: All of the paleoclimatological PDO data in this post have been smoothed with a 30-year running-average filter to highlight the low frequency variability.

The longer-term dataset from MacDonald and Case (2005) skews the graph, so I’ve started the comparison in 1700 in Figure 3. There does not appear to be a persistent 60-year cycle in any of the PDO reconstruction datasets. If fact, there appears to be little agreement between the reconstructions prior to the early 1900s, but the datasets were, of course, based on different proxies and from different continents.

The 2009/10 El Nino was an El Nino Modoki. It was a central tropical Pacific El Nino.You asked, "Should we expect another 'step change' in SST and surface temperatures?"If there is a significant La Nina, the east Indian and West Pacific Oceans should respond with an upward shift. Part of the apparent shift in TLT and LST anomalies in the mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere resulted from the AMO, which was rising until 2005 and helping to maintain the temps at post 1997/98 El Nino levels. But the North Atlantic SST anomalies have been dropping since around 2005, so I can't say for sure that the shift will be as obvious.

It does feel better and better, and though it scarcely constitutes proof, it is a lead to follow IMHO.Incidentally, the astrophysics of the 60-year cycle is a bit more complex than Harrywr2 says. Jupiter and Saturn are CONJUNCT every 20 years, but each conjunction is nearly exactly 120° offset from the one before, thus after 60 years the (4th) conjunction returns to almost exactly the same position as the first. There may well be harmonics with other planets significant regarding the solar system barycentre, that only kick in every 60 years but I don't know. Tallbloke might know.

  16. 1) The data about ocean temperatures are extremely uncertain especially going back > 15 years.

    2) One can’t be certain if the way we measure PDO is a good way to measure the phenomenon in question

    3) What we are talking about in my opinion is a 60 year cycle in the temperature data that when overlaid with CO2 and a few other things explains the temperature record very nicely going back 120+ years. I have a simple model that uses a 60 year cycle and 0.23C variation for PDO + and – phases combined with a 1.2TCS that matches the unadjusted temperature record (unhomogenized) much more closely than the billion dollar climate models.

    4) The lack of ability to explain the recent 20 year pause in temperature corresponds with a negative phase of this cycle which reproduces it.

    5) The accumulation of heat at depth may be a better measure of this phenomenon.

  18. Bob, I know. I can only say that this science has had 2 serious discoveries in recent decade that highlight the lack of knowledge and data. (1) PDO cyclic behavior and 2) undersea volcanism and connection to orbital variations). Both of these discoveries involve new things we didn’t know about before that we don’t have data to properly model or answer questions at this time. This simply means maybe we won’t have a coherent theory for a while. We either have to figure how to find proxies for this data or simply measure today and hope to discover patterns and behavior that leads to an ultimate theory.

    In physics we frequently can’t get the data to measure something directly. We keep coming up with ideas, see how that would affect related things and then verify against data we CAN get.

    For me clearly the PDO and AMO are cyclic behavior and it would be surprising if there were not some deep ocean behavior that at least partially reflects this. So, it would be reasonable to conclude (as a theory) that since PDO involves heat at the surface in certain regions and we have not identified the specific cause of the PDO variability we could suggest that some of the deep ocean heat is likely to be a cyclic phenomenon and be related to these other phenomenon. I find the claim that heat from CO2 molecules at 2,000 ft altitude above the sea level is somehow making its way to the deep ocean 2000 feet below the sea level so efficiently that virtually 100% of it has magically escaped heating the upper ocean or the sea level. A more natural explanation would be it has something to do with an already known cyclic process which also happens to be peaking now called the PDO and AMO.

    3 recent articles on undersea volcanoes also point to a clear association not understood just a few years ago. There is a surprising relationship between undersea leakages from the mantle and the time of the year and to certain tidal forces. This implies that structural pressures from the moon and sun, motion of the earth and possibly the shifting of the earths structure and the pressures cause periodic spurts of undersea volcanic releases. Other evidence has been shown that both 600 million years ago and during ice ages that the milankovic cycles could induce a significant movement of earths crust that could cause release of energy from fissures in the ocean. Another article described that there are far more of these fissures than previously known and another article showed that pressure from glaciers could deform the earth sufficiently to cause fissures in the crust to widen or close depending on the movement of the mass on the surface. This was not talked about at all in previous climate science or more precisely was discounted as not possibly being big enough to make a difference.

    These two recent discoveries clearly show that the climate science of 30 years ago which is still the climate science of today according to the models is seriously flawed. Further recent study shows the climate models do not hindcast anytthing but temperature with any accuracy. This is damning. I would never trust a model which had clearly been tuned to fit one paramater but MISSED all the other parameters in historical hindcast simulations. It simply is untenale to suggest the models have any validity if they are unable to predict any of the factors which go into the temperature how they could possibly be correct in predicting the temperature. It’s just so ludicrous.
