PRELIMINARY August 2011 SST Anomaly Update

Sorry for the delay.  There was a temporary loss of electric power and internet service.

The August 2011 Reynolds OI.v2 Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data through the NOAA NOMADS website won’t be official until Monday, September 5th. Refer to the schedule on the NOAA Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature Analysis Frequently Asked Questionswebpage. The following are the preliminary Global and NINO3.4 SST anomalies for August 2011 that the NOMADS website prepares based on incomplete data for the month. I’ve also included the weekly data through August 24, 2011, but I’ve shortened the span of the weekly data, starting it in January 2004, so that the variations can be seen.

PRELIMINARY MONTHLY DATA

Based on the preliminary data Monthly NINO3.4 SST anomalies are at -0.49 deg C, just above the threshold of a La Niña. And that’s a significant drop from last month.

The preliminary global SST anomaly is +0.165 deg C.

    Do you mean September 5th?

Thanks for posting this. Always interesting to me

  4. Bob Tisdale says:

timetochooseagain: Thanks for catching the problem with the date of August 5. Corrected.

  5. HR says:

Bob this is great as always. How is your volcano-adjusted ‘rest of the world’ data looking thru’ August? Still rising?

  6. Bob Tisdale says:

HR: Sorry. We’ll know on Monday when the Reynolds OI.v2 data is final for the month. I haven’t had the chance to take a preliminary look. Most of my time this week has been spent cleaning up after the storm.
