Brilliant and so simple. Anyone with even a modicum of intelligence would understand perfectly that the AGW myth is exactly that.

It’s ‘political’. When you’re out to save the world from every form of human stupidity known to man you have to start somewhere and since, as they used to say, “everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it” some saw that as the perfect “Save The World” ploy to beat us over the head with and pick our pockets. It’s amazing how long they kept most of the intellectual elite in a tizzy, or maybe it was the intellectual elite that kept so many of the most in the tizzy. Bet a real psychologist would find this an interesting area of research –but then s/he would be bucking the establishment and I don’t think anyone’s doing that in academia these days.
And people wonder why I’ve been saying they’ve been putting something in the drinking water since the Old Soviet Union went under. I knew I was onto something, people haven’t believed so much put out by so few for so long since the Cold War;-)
Pascvaks: I seem to recall Crichton including a chapter about people needing a new Cold War in “State of Fear”, with the protagonist meeting with a college professor somewhere in California to discuss it. Have you read it?

Should have added: People need “External” threats to come together, that’s where we get the old “All for One and One for All”. I think that’s the point he’s making, if we don’t have it, we go for each other’s throats, and wives, and kids get run over in the streets. If there’s no “US v. Them” that only leaves “US v. US” — and there has been a lot of that these days — but I think we’ve now seen that there are plenty of ‘Thems’ out there and they don’t like us and we better get our act together. All this ‘We Are The World’ stuff the past few years was getting real stale and stupid. Once the old USSR dried up it was just a matter of time before China and the Islamists jumped up and cryed “Now me! Now Me!” (Cavemen without enemies only have their wife and kids to kill. ;-(
But I’m still going to track down that book and see how he phrased it. 😉
